One Click Upgrade with NSX (GI) on Nutanix

What’s One Click Upgrade? One of the most pain-point in any infrastructure is the periodic firmware updates to the underlying infrastructure. In addition to being a painful process, this is a very time consuming activity. One of the Coolest feature of Nutanix systems has been 1 Click Upgrade where the entire update process for NOS, NCC, Hypervisor and firmware can be automated. 1 Click update is a non-disruptive process where there is no downtime required and is a completely seamless automatic rolling update process. It also runs set of pre-checks and post-checks to ensure the health status of the cluster and that’s Cool! Note: One Click upgrade for firmware doesn’t work across all hardware OEMs and in some cases is work in progress. What’s NSX Guest Introspection Guest introspection is a service that is deployed from NSX Manager to offload security functions to a dedicated security appliance on each hypervisor host in a VMware environment thereby removing the need for an AV agent within the guest operating system. Using the Guest Introspection driver baked into VMware Tools and a third-party service virtual machine, such as McAfee MOVE, all virtual machines are protected by real-time inspection as soon as they are […]

Converged vs. Hyper Converged Infrastructure 2

Ensuring availability of business-critical applications is the top most priority of every IT Leader. This is what drives each one of us day in and day out to continuously innovate so that the customer pain-point can be solved. Customer need drives innovation without which there is no innovation. Single most disruptive technology over the past decade has been Virtualization. This helped put the focus on availability and resource efficiency/optimization that in turn helped drive compute innovation – from discrete to blades to Converged Infrastructure to Hyper-Converged Infrastructure systems. Virtualization made the impossible possible and I am sure most of us still remember our first vMotion! During the Non-Virtualization era, we used to have datacenter filled with dedicated rack servers running multiple web servers, application and database servers to provide high availability and most of the clustering was carried out at application level. Today if you look at those times, inefficiency was written all over the place.  Introduction of Blade technology almost during the same period as virtualization helped organization reduce on the rack and power consumption at the datacenter but the lack of clustering at infrastructure layer persisted and continued to be a pain-point until we had virtualization going main […]

Modular Architecture for Modern Datacenter

Modular Architecture is the most critical aspect of the next generation modern data-center. Its important to be modular not only in the way the hardware is implemented but also the software that drives the hardware and the applications that the end consumers access. Being Modular helps organization to be Cloud Scale, Elastic, Scale-out and highly available. Every Organization wants to enable cloud-like economics and scale without compromising the performance, reliability, and availability in their own data-center. What are the current pain-points that drives the needs for Modular Architecture ? Discrete Infrastructure resulting in non-optimal utilization of resources Capacity and Performance monitoring & management challenges Discrete Teams for management of Compute,Storage & network architecture and delays in their coming together Infrastructure Ownership From Hardware perspective focusing on the enterprise , among many there are two approaches for the modern data-center that stands-out as mentioned below. Converged Infrastructure Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Let’s start with understanding of each one of them from Wikipedia Converged infrastructure operates by grouping multiple information technology (IT) components into a single, optimized computing package. Components of a converged infrastructure may include servers, data storage devices, networking equipment and software for IT infrastructure management, automation and orchestration. Hyper-Converged Infrastructure (HCI) refers […]
